The long entry

Jitter is the visual equivalent of a tremolo. Used sparingly, it conveys energy, malfunction or anxiety. Used carelessly, it reads as a bug. The trick is amplitude: a few pixels of shake at sixty hertz reads as 'alive'; ten pixels reads as 'broken'.
